Fall Fishing Reservoirs with Dylan Nussbaum | EP. 33

As shorter days, cooler temps and pumpkin spice latte’s start to show up you can bet it is about to be some of the best fishing of the year.  Fall is a time when many outdoor enthusiasts debate whether to head to the woods, marshes or lakes.  I myself am guilty as I am a deer hunter, duck hunter and a fish head.  It is tough to decide on what to do when many of us only have a few days off before we have to head back into work.  For anyone struggling out there here is what I typically do.

If I happen to be blessed with the perfect fall Saturday or Sunday I first will pay attention to wind.  Sometimes a perfect wind for hunting might not be the best wind for the lake you are fishing or vice versa.  The wind direction may not be the best one for hunting your stand which would make heading out to chase after big fish an easier decision knowing you are not disturbing your best producing hunting spot.  Another thing I typically consider is if the wind is calm I will wake up early and get out on the water while it is still dark in the morning and make the best of the cooler weather and locate the fish before sun up.  Fall fishing is, in my opinion, the best time to fish and produces some of the biggest bags of the year.  If I can go out and catch big walleye in the morning and grind it out in the early AM, it leaves me plenty of time to get off the water and back home to grab a bite before heading out to the tree stand.    I always plan my fall excursions out and give my “time outdoors” more thought so I can be efficient as possible.  Now, the beauty about bad winds for both deer hunting and fishing is you can always go duck hunting!  If you like to duck hunt you already know some of the worst weather can be the best time to be stacking up greenheads for the freezer.  So you see, you are never out of options.

Joining the podcast today to help us locate big walleye on our local reservoirs is Dylan Nussbaum.  Dylan is a well known professional walleye angler and in 2018 became the youngest angler to win an NWT event at the age of 20 years old.  I ask Dylan about his journey to winning his first major tournament and how life changed for him after in regards to being a known name in the industry.  After a recap of his 2019 season Dylan and I get into how he likes to fish for walleye in fall on reservoirs.  Dylan shares a ton of great tips, areas to target, baits and techniques used to reel in big walleye this fall.

Fall is here everyone.  I hope you find time to divide and conquer your time between the woods, marshes and lakes.  Good Luck!

Cheers
