Having been an avid outdoorsman all of my life, I know what it is like to have to wait for a “opener” of some sorts in order to start my seasonal pursuit of some type of critter. Duck opener (three separate zones), deer archery season opener, deer rifle opener and turkey opener are the first ones to come to mind. Any Michigander I feel can relate. However, Minnesota sportsmen hold their annual spring “Fish Opener” in such high regards that I feel us Michiganders should start to do the same.
Matt Johnson from Matt Johnson Outdoors joins me on this podcast to give us an inside look of what it is like to wait for such a celebrated holiday in the state of 10,000 lakes. Matt goes over what the typical opener consists of and what some can expect if ever given the opportunity to experience such a celebrated tradition. During the podcast it is interesting to hear what Matt does with his opener and how he finds success by staying away from the crowds. We go over in detail on why he decides to target crappie this time of year and what other species you would be surprised to find in the shallows with the crappie. It is one of the best times of the year to chase crappie and keep a few to take home for the fryer. I ask Matt to break down his technique, tackle used and where to find these great tasting fish.
If you have ever wanted to know how to be successful in the fishing industry, Matt is someone who I regard to be at the top amongst his peers. I talk with Matt about the industry, how he got started and what other inspiring anglers can be doing now to be successful in their aspirations. There are many life and business lessons you can be taught in the sport of fishing. I always try to get my guests to give their insight and share with others how they have been successful. Matt is the pro staff manager for companies like Blackfish, Ice Team and Clam. It is no surprise after getting to know Matt more why he holds the leadership position he does with these companies. It is my hope that you can walk away with learning as much as I did over the course of our 50 minute conversation.
So sit back and find a piece of pen and paper because you are going to learn not only how to catch crappies this time of year but what you could be doing now to take your fishing career to the next level.
Cheers
Lee
